Queensland’s dominance
in the recent Australian Women’s Rugby League State of Origin series was
reflected in the Jillaroos squad to contest the 2008 Women’s World Cup,
announced today.
The Queenslanders retained the
Nellie Dougherty Shield for the sixth consecutive year at the weekend, wrapping
up a 2-nil series win over NSW in Brisbane.
Fifteen members of the victorious Queensland
team, including captain Tahnee Norris, make up the 23-strong Jillaroos
squad.
Head coach Karen Stuart said it was
a squad which could challenge current World Champions New Zealand.
“We’ve picked a very strong squad,”
Stuart said.
“There’s no doubt the challenge will
be New
Zealand – they are the
benchmark.
“We’re confident of giving them a
good run at the World Cup.”
The Australian Women’s Rugby League
executive announced Tahnee Norris as the captain for the 2008 World Cup
campaign.
It will be a third World Cup
campaign for Norris, who played in the inaugural Women’s World Cup in
2000.
“It’s a real honour to lead such a
quality team in the World Cup,” Norris said today.
“The State of Origin series was intense
so I know there is a lot of passion amongst all our
players.
“We’ll come together now and do our
best for the green and gold and I know everyone can’t wait for a chance to knock
off New
Zealand.”
The Women’s Rugby League World Cup
will be played from November 3-15 at Kawana on Queensland’s SunshineCoast.
