As its National Championships came to a close today Australian Women's Rugby League took a new step forward with the appointment of its first dedicated administration officer in Annie Banks.
Banks, the One Community Women's Volunteer of Year in 2008, will take up her part-time post after playing an integral role in the staging of last year's Women’s World Cup.
Announced today by the Australian Rugby League, Banks' appointment comes as the Women’s game prepares for an even bigger 2009 featuring its annual NSW versus Queensland interstate match at CUA Stadium on July 18.
Australian Rugby League Chief Executive Geoff Carr said Banks would play a key role in providing more opportunities for women and girls to play Rugby League.
"Annie has worked tirelessly for the women's game over a number of years and she was the ideal candidate for what is a key appointment for the sport," Carr said.
"Annie's major responsibilities include the promotion of the women's game and in particular the pathway that exists for girls playing school Rugby League to transition into club women’s Rugby League.
"She will also play a key role in sourcing sponsorship for the women's program and assisting with the National Jillaroos team which has enjoyed great success in recent seasons and continues to showcase Australia’s best female players."
The AWRL National Championships concluded today with South East Queensland defending their title with a 20-12 win over NSW City.
In the third/fourth playoff, NSW Residents defeated North Queensland North 22-10 to secure the bronze.
NSW and Queensland selectors are expected to finalise their respective squads for the upcoming interstate match in the coming week after keeping a close eye on each Championship match.
Australian selectors were also on hand during the past three days to view players vying for selection in the Jillaroos national side.
